White represents peace, green represents the hope that the nation places on future development, and red symbolises the suffering of the nation during its struggle for freedom.
Wikipedia cites three symbolic meanings for the three stars in triangular configuration: (a) the three major ethnic groups of Burundi (Hutu, Twa and Tutsi); (b) the three elements of the national motto: Unité, Travail, Progrès (Unity, Work and Progress); and (c) the loyalty that the citizens have pledged to their God, king and country.
